Vaccination Requirements for Hajj and Umrah

Large pilgrimages bring together millions of people from around the world, which makes them a high-risk setting for infectious disease. Saudi Arabia therefore requires proof of vaccination against meningococcal disease for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Serogroup W meningococcal disease has caused outbreaks among pilgrims in Mecca, which is why the Meningitis ACWY vaccine — protecting against serogroups A, C, W and Y — is required.

Required Vaccine: Meningitis ACWY

A single dose of the conjugate Meningitis ACWY vaccine gives protection for at least 5 years. It must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia, and you'll need the official certificate as proof.

At Chiswick Travel Clinic we give the vaccine and provide that certificate at your appointment. Read more about the Meningitis ACWY vaccine.

Recommended Vaccines for Hajj and Umrah

In addition to the required vaccine, the following are commonly recommended for pilgrims — our pharmacist will advise on what's right for you:

  • ✔Hepatitis A (£55 per dose) — recommended for travellers to Saudi Arabia, particularly if eating outside hotels.
  • ✔Typhoid (£40 per dose) — for pilgrims who may eat food prepared outside large hotels.
  • ✔Influenza — respiratory infections are very common among crowds of pilgrims. Seasonal flu vaccination is offered by Alisha Pharmacy, the pharmacy that hosts our clinic — ask us when you book.
  • ✔Pneumococcal and COVID-19 — pneumococcal vaccine is advised for older pilgrims and those with heart, lung or kidney disease or diabetes. Ask us or your GP whether you're eligible, and check your COVID-19 vaccinations are up to date.

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

Book as soon as your dates are confirmed — ideally 6–8 weeks before departure, and no later than 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia. Demand rises sharply in the weeks before the Hajj season, and some vaccines need to be ordered in.

Side Effects

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is well tolerated. Common effects are mild soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, and occasionally a mild headache or low-grade fever, which resolve within 1–2 days. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare.
